Why Essential Oils?
I started using essential oils a few years ago, and was blown away by the results. They offered me a natural and safe option to treat my young children, helped me personally create a shift in my own physical and emotional wellbeing, and empowered my patients with tools they could implement between our sessions together.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are pure, liquid extracts that are steam-released or pressed from the leaf, stem, roots, flowers or rinds of plants. They have therapeutic properties that support our health and can address a wide range of concerns. They are 100% plant derived with no additional processing, preservatives, or additives.
What can Essential Oils do for me?
Support and balance hormones
Ease feelings of overwhelm and anxiety, help manage stress
Support children’s health, wellness and immunity
Boost metabolism, manage cravings and support digestion
Provide a non-toxic, chemical-free alternative to cleaning and body products
Support fertility and hormone balance
Support immunity, digestion, respiration, allergies and sleep
Ease pain, support healing and recovery-time
We live in an increasingly toxic world. Our water and air, our food, and especially our homes are making us sick. Whether it’s heightened allergies, digestive and skin issues, decreased immunity, our toxic load is higher than it has ever been. The cleaning and beauty products so many of us were brought up using (and even the "natural" ones we may now turn to) are full of fragrances, chemicals and ingredients that disrupt our natural rhythms--like our hormones, which regulate so many of our body's systems--and are difficult for us to process. Essential oils offer a natural and effective alternative. We can use them to clean our homes, add them to our skin and beauty regimes, use them for emotional support, to ease tension in the body or to help us relax. Because each essential oil has a unique chemical composition, each essential oil has a unique effect on the body's systems. In other words, there is an oil for everything!
How do I use them?
AROMATICALLY - The easiest way to enjoy the benefits of an essential oil is to simply open the cap and breathe deeply. You can put a drop on your palm, rub your hands together and inhale. Or put a drop on your pillow at night to promote a sense of calm as you drift off to sleep. But my absolute favorite way to use essential oils aromatically is in a diffuser--just add a few drops of a single oil or a custom blend and let the therapeutic benefits begin.
TOPICALLY - Combine your oil with a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil--no scent, lightweight) and apply to the area of concern or to the bottoms of feet. It's important to dilute the oils for a couple of reasons. Number one, these oils are powerful, concentrated, and a little goes a long way—you want to minimize any chance of skin sensitivity. Number two, the carrier actually helps the oils absorb more slowly and more fully into your skin. And finally, number three, the carrier oil helps you cover a wider surface area, spreading the benefit of the oil.
INTERNALLY - Certain essential oils can be taken in a capsule form, dropped under the tongue, or consumed in food or liquid. There are lots of differing opinions on the best way to consume essential oils, so do your own research, and consult your healthcare provider if you are uncertain. I would ONLY recommend using dōTERRA oils internally (their standards are the highest). The oils that are safe for internal consumption have a “supplement label” on the back. Just a drop or two is all you need.
Essential oils are everywhere these days and there are many companies to choose from. Don't be mistaken by labels or assume that because essential oils come from plants they are natural, safe or effective. It's important to understand that the essential oil category is completely unregulated. So in order to supply the highest quality essential oils, doTERRA developed their own standards with rigorous third-party testing at multiple stages of the sourcing process for EVERY liter of oil produced. This process is called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) and ensures that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in their essential oils that would reduce their efficacy. Aside from their rigorous testing, dōTERRA is also deeply committed to environmental sustainability, ethical employment and equitable wages for men and women through their co-impact sourcing initiative. Additionally, dōTERRA’s charitable organization, the Healing Hands Foundation, provides funding and resources to create community-based, social-impact projects to improve lives throughout the larger communities where oils are sourced. Highlights include medical clinics, drinking water and irrigation systems, schools, and vocational training programs. See an amazing video of this work in action.
